Austin STD Testing Questions
How much does STD testing cost in Austin?
Austin Public Health's Sexual Health Clinic at the RBJ Health Center says the fee for testing and treatment is $30. ASHwell lists its services as free, though medication may cost something. Vivent Health lists free HIV testing. Fees and hours can change, so confirm by phone before you go.
Can I get tested without an appointment?
Kind Clinic on Koenig Lane offers walk-in testing for gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, HIV and hepatitis C, and UT Austin's University Health Services has drop-in testing for students without symptoms. ASHwell does not accept walk-ins. Kind Clinic's South Austin site does not offer walk-in STI testing. Call first.
Can I get tested at home for free?
Texas DSHS runs Test for Texas, which offers free mail-order self-testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia at testfortexas.org. Together TakeMeHome, funded by the CDC, mails free HIV self-tests to people 17 and older in the U.S. A clinician can explain what any result means and arrange follow-up.
I'm under 18. Can I get tested without a parent?
Under Texas Family Code Sec. 32.003, a minor of any age may consent to diagnosis and treatment of a reportable infectious disease, which covers reportable STIs and HIV, and parent consent is not needed. The same law lets a physician tell a parent, so ask the clinic about its practice before your visit.
What should I do if I think I was exposed?
A clinician can tell you which tests fit your situation and when to test. Austin Public Health's clinic tests for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia, and says it can test for genital herpes only when you have active symptoms. Call 512-972-5430 to schedule, and ask about timing for your exposure.
This page is general health information, not medical advice. It cannot tell you whether you have an infection. A clinician can, and the testing options on this site are a good place to start. If you may have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, go to an emergency department or urgent care now and ask about PEP.
